  • Special Issue: Understanding the Dynamics of Intergenerational Relationships -- Call for Papers

    Dear Colleagues,

    In the year 2022, the fourth review and appraisal of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing (MIPAA) are taking place. It is worth reminding that “building a society for all ages” is a key challenge of this United Nations strategic document. However, nearly 20 years after the adoption of MIPAA, the studies on intergenerational relationships are still not adequately advanced. At the same time, the list of relevant topics that needs more in-depth studies is growing. Examples include intergenerational issues in population theories and population projections; intergenerational family relations and social support; intergenerational relations in the context of population ageing, migrations, longevity, and depopulation; intergenerational solidarity in social security and welfare state institutions; intergenerational challenges in the socio-economic and environmental changes including achieving the Sustainable Development Goals; intergenerational programs and policies; and age-friendly environments, cities, and communities.

  • Special Issue: Active Ageing and Educational Gerontology--Call for Papers

    Dear Colleagues

    The World Health Organization designed educational gerontology as the foundation that supports the three key pillars of active ageing - namely, health, social participation and income security. Lifelong learning opportunities in later life enable older persons to age successfully, and remain socially relevant and engaged in society. The integration of lifelong learning into active ageing discourse functions to safeguard the right of persons to age positively since the potential role that learning might play in promoting quality of life in old age has long been recognized by academics and policy makers alike. Older adults’ participation in learning is independently and positively associated with social and psychological wellbeing, even among those typically classified as frail and/or vulnerable by allowing to strengthen their reserve capacities and remaining autonomous and fulfilled.   • Correlates of internet use among older adults

    Diana Devine, et al. recruited A sample of 898 US adults ranging from 18 to 76 years of age through Amazon's Mechanical Turk platform to complete the Internet Addiction Test and key measures of affect, disposition, and cognitive function. Results founds that:

    • Older adults experience lower levels of internet addiction relative to younger adults.

    • Relatively mild levels of internet addiction are associated with suboptimal affective, dispositional, and cognitive factors.

    • Creative achievement increases with higher levels of internet addiction.

  • Publication of Special Issue - Environment and Population Dynamics in South Asia

    After more than a year, the publication of Special Issue - Environment and Population Dynamics in South Asia has finally come to an end. This thematic issue encompasses four research articles, three review articles, and an editorial that revolve around the issues related to population dynamics and its relationship with various environmental issues such as climate change and resilience, natural disaster, disaster management, waste management, WASH, urbanization and air pollution, climate change and migration, climate change and health etc.

    We would like extend our sincere gratitude to Dr. Sangram Kishor Patel, the Guest Editor of this Special Issue for his relentless efforts in soliciting submissions and the editing process. We’re also indebted to Dr. Danan Gu, the Editor-in-Chief for his intellectual input for this Special Issue.

  • Editorial: The special issue on environment and population dynamics in South Asia

    In the last few decades (particularly after 1950), the world’s population doubled from three billion to six billion-plus population. This increased the pressure on land use and resource depletion continued. Further, it fuelled with habitat destruction, loss of biodiversity, water scarcity and water pollution, air pollution, global warming, and climate change across the globe.

  • United Nations Expert Group Meeting on "Population, food security, nutrition and sustainable development"

    The question of how to feed a growing global population has been central to discussions around population and development for decades. While the Programme of Action of the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development highlighted the problem of undernutrition, today's discussion of malnutrition is broader and includes stunting, wasting, overweight and obesity, as well as micronutrient deficiencies. Moreover, there is an increasing recognition of the challenges to food security posed by factors such as climate change, conflict and economic downturns.

    Recognizing the importance and timeliness of these topics, the United Nations Commission on Population and Development decided in 2018 that the thematic focus of its fifty-third session in 2020 would be "Population, food security, nutrition and sustainable development". In preparation for the upcoming session, the Population Division of UN DESA will convene an expert group meeting on this topic, to be held in New York from 16 to 17 September 2019.

    The expert meeting is expected to provide substantive inputs for the preparation of the reports of the Secretary-General on the special theme of the fifty-third session of the Commission on Population and Development. In particular, the meeting will result in draft recommendations on ways in which the Commission can contribute to the international dialogue on the issues.

  • A study on the risk factors and socioeconomic inequalities in undernutrition among children 0-59 months of age in India

    Thirupathi Reddy Mokalla and Vishnu Vardhana Rao Mendu studied the risk factors and socioeconomic inequalities in undernutrition among children 0-59 months of age in India. This study uses data from the 4th round of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-4), conducted in 2015-2016. We considered anthropometric indicators of unit-level data of 2, 48, and 174 children aged 0-59 months. This study examines the socio-economic inequality in nutritional status and their determinants among under-5 year children. The factors considered in the analysis were categorized as child age in months, mother’s educational status, mother’s nutritional-status, type of caste, wealth index, birth order, and size of a child at birth. In this study, multivariate logistic regression and concentration index (CI) have been employed to explore the effect of various factors on the child’s nutritional status. The binary logistic analysis has demonstrated a significant association between child nutritional status and mother’s education, mother’s nutritional status, type of caste, wealth index, birth order, and size of a child at birth. The results show that the CI for stunting, underweight, and wasting were −0.14, −0.16, and −0.08. Therefore, these factors were significantly high in poorer households. This study suggests that the nutrition-specific programs to encourage nutritional adequacy, diversity, reduces the nutritional burden, and growth of child’s in India.

  • Use of the average age ratio method in analyzing age heaping in censuses: The case of China

    Danan Gu and Qiushi Feng studied to assess age heaping or digit preference in all population censuses of China. The study shows that age heaping in China’s censuses is likely associated with age-related policies such as those on late marriage and retirement. As shown in the study, the average age ratio method can be an alternative of the Whipple’s Index and be improved if the size of birth cohort was taken into account when the number of births is generally reliable.

    We would like to launch a series of special issues related to population dynamics and challenges in Asia.

    Asia is the most populous continent in the world with great diversities in population growth and socioeconomic development. Many Asian countries witnessed a faster pace of urbanization, population aging than most today's developed countries; and most of them will likely grow old before they grow rich. However, the poor health care system, inadequate pension coverage, poor nutrition, poor facilities and infrastructure, and poor living environments, will impose tremendous challenges for Asian countries. In order to provide scholarly articles to help address the challenges, International Journal of Population Studies is proud to launch series of special issues. These special issues will focus on, but not limited to the following themes:

  • Fifteenth Coordination Meeting on International Migration 16-17 February 2017

    The 15th Coordination Meeting on International Migration will take stock of progress made in implementing the migration-related commitments of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (A/RES/70/1). The meeting wil also contribute to the implementation of the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants (A/RES/71/1) by reviewing the substantive preparations for the 2018 intergovernmental conference on international migration, with a particular focus on the global compact for safe, orderly and regular migration.

    International Journal of Population Studies (IJPS) is an open access, multidisciplinary journal that publishes high quality original research and timely reviews of recent advances and emerging issues in population processes; dynamics of fertility, mortality, and migration; and linkages with socioeconomic and environmental change across times, spaces, and cultures.

    The journal aims to provide a platform for researchers worldwide to promote and share cutting-edge knowledge and advances in different areas of population research. Article formats include original research, commentaries, meta-analyses, perspectives, short technical research notes, review articles, and book reviews that address demography and population-related issues.
